Packing Tips & Advice

Packaging Materials; Boxes, Bubble Wrap etc..

The first step in preparing for your removal or storage is to have the right number and sizes of boxes. There are all different sizes of specialised storage and removal boxes available such as archive boxes for important documents, wardrobe boxes, book boxes and large boxes for bulkier items.

Boxes should be filled to capacity to help avoid them tipping. Use smaller boxes for heavier items such as books so they are easier to lift. Use a wardrobe box for clothes to help them keep their shape.

You will need protective wrap for all your delicate belongings, bubble wrap is the ideal way to protect your electrical items such as T.V and stereo, or particularly fragile items such as crystal. Acid free tissue or white paper for your crockery and corrugated card for your chair and table legs.

Packing Kits

To help speed things up, create a portable packing kit with a marker pen, parcel tape, labels scissors and tape measure. Carry it with you as you go packing around your home. Each time you pack a box, use your marker pen to label where they are to be unloaded and also write the contents on the side.

Fragile Items

Always stack plates upright on their sides, making sure that you wrap them individually in tissue or paper. If you find the contents are loose in the box you can use ‘void fill’ to keep them in place.

Wrap pictures and mirrors individually in bubble wrap, mark as fragile and stack on end. It is important that boxes containing fragile items are labelled correctly to help prevent damage. This also enables us to pack our vehicles or storage containers.

Preparing Electrical Equipment

Television, hi-fi and computer equipment should be ideally packed into its original boxes if you still have them. If not we can supply suitable boxes.

Preparing Appliances

Drain freezers, washing machines and refrigerators prior to storage. Store these items with the door wedged open.
Jewellery and securities should not be placed in storage, as they are not covered by our insurance policy. Please see our Terms and Conditions.

Packing for Storage

Consider which items you may need access to whilst in storage such as Christmas decorations, passports, items of clothing etc to prevent the stress and unnecessary unloading of containers. Any items that may need to be retrieved whilst in store should be packed last to enable easy access.

Bedding

Never pack bedding or clothes in plastic bags, use boxes, so that air can circulate.

Essentials Box

Have an essentials box and fill with items such as: Kettle, mugs, tea, coffee, milk, sugar, toilet rolls snacks and soft drink. If you are moving yourself make sure that you don’t lift to much, if you need to move heavy appliances it can be a good idea to get appliance rollers or sack truck.
